Other possible titles to this blog could be: "Why it's sometimes good to be single with a career," or "Life is beautiful - especially when you're in Puerto Rico," or "How to motivate your friends to start saving for their next vacation."
Long story short: my roommate, Princess, and I decided that since we had a long weekend coming up, we wanted to get out. Two days later, we bought tickets to Puerto Rico, and two days after that, we were there. Hilights include:
Hiking around the peaks and waterfalls of El Yunque rainforest. We "rented" a chauffer to get us there, wait around for us, then take us to San Juan. He had to give someone else a ride, so we had to wait around for an hour after we were done playing until he got back. No big deal, right? Except...
Before he got back, we hiked to the summit of El Yunque (we were literally in the clouds), and we got caught in a torrential downpour as soon as we started back down. Splashing in the puddles was fun, but we must have looked pretty pathetic after an hour of waiting, because this Austrian lady that we befriended loaned me her jacket.
We also rented mountain
bikes to explore and discover sparsely-populated white-sand beaches...
We made friends with a local who took us snorkeling...and let us play with the iguana he caught after it fell out of a tree...
Major hilight was BIO BAY! This water is full of bioluminescent microorganisms that glow every time the water moves. There's a half a million to every gallon of water. We got to go kayaking in the water, and they even let us swim in it!
We visited an old fort (the Morro) in Viejo San Juan. You have to pay to get inside, but since we were on a budget, we opted to just explore around the outside. No complaints here.
Best spontaneous trip ever. The end.
